Lindy's Re-opens!

I found out last night that Lindy's has re-opened. They shut down for a while, and I wasn't sure they would be back. I had heard that one of Lindy's partners quit/absconded/went to jail, I wasn't sure which was true, but the place is open again, so who cares?

Lindy's is on Fourth Avenue, on the West side of the street, about a block south of sixth. I don't know the address, that's why. It's next to Piney Hollow for those of you that like buying beads. In fact, Lindy himself saved Piney Hollow from certain destruction a few months back, when he put out a fire there.

I talked to Lindy last night and the place will be open at night this time around, and open after the bars close. So, drunks from Che's, Plush and Surly Wench will not need to walk all the way to Brooklyn Pizza for a late night food fix after closing time. Luckilly, it is not stumbling distance from O'Malleys.

Glenn Ford

I liked him in The Sheepman (thus the picture), but he made a great Pa Kent too.

So, this gave me a chance to go back and find out things from him. Some Canadian will point out that the man was, well, Canadian.

He was also born with the first name Gwyllyn. Probably wouldn't have gotten a part in Day of the Evil Gun with that one.

Last Night's Juke Box Picks

Had another pool league game last night. I lost, but the team won.

I figure that it's time to be one of those really egomaniacal bloggers (is there any other kind?) that thinks you would be interested in the mundane details of their lives.

I picked some songs on the jukebox, thinking that I was up next. Turns out I wasn't. But, here were the songs I picked:

Patsy Cline - A Poor Man's Roses or a Rich Man's Gold
Wanda Jackson - Funnel of Love
Buzzcocks - I Don't Mind
Motörhead - Ace of Spades

By the way, there is someone there who always picks Journey songs. I think I know who it is, but I am not sure what to do about it.

Revolution 1 - Crew Zip, Zero, Zilch

Matt Reis friggin' rawks. You must remember that.

The Columbus Crew thought they had him beat when James Riley got called for a hand ball in the box. The ever more scraggly looking Eddie Gaven couldn't squeeze one by the bald man.

Heh heh.

What makes this more delicious was back in 2004, Reis saved not one, but two penalty kicks against the same team. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, jackass!

Sorry, I get a little worked up.

Kudos to fellow Polish-American Jeff Larentowicz for scoring his first MLS goal. Larentowicz is also one in a fine tradition of over-tall goofy red-headed Rev defenders. All he needs is a goatee.

Extra points to Revs announcer Greg Lalas for invoking the name Nigel Tufnel in his pregame commentary. It is further proof of the younger Lalas's commentator godhood over jokers like Ethan Zohn and Shep Messing.

Some guy named Shelton Williams will be playing at Hotel Congress tonight. Anyone know if he is any good? Does he have the proper pedigree to be playing such music?

Pluto Is Gone; Mickey Very Depressed

The International Astronomical Union has demoted Pluto from full blown planet status. Which means that anyone who continues to refer to Pluto as a planet will be considered a "scab" astronomer.

This contraversey bloomed when a new object, 2003 UB313 (unofficially dubbed "Xena"), was discovered and many astronomers refused to call it a planet. The problem was that the object was actually bigger than Pluto, whose planetary status had also been in some dispute but is popularly refered to as a planet.

There was no definition for how small a planet could be. However, a large planet-like object could be considered a brown dwarf star if it was big enough.

There was an initial proposal that would have allowed "Xena," the asteroid Ceres and Pluto to be called planets. The trouble was that the definition (enough mass that gravity causes it to be round) also would have made Pluto's moon, Charon, a planet too. There were proposals regarding "dominance over a orbital region" and two classifications of planets that were rejected.
Now, there are eight planets and Pluto is a "dwarf planet," which isn't a planet. Got that?

Coming Distractions

Mozart's Sister, Sara Bellum and Onadi will be playing at Heart 5 tonight. It is a debut for Mozart's Sister, which includes Amy Muñoz from the Gunrunners and art teacher Julie Bonner, who has also been in a couple of other local bands.

No, I don't know what they sound like. Pay your four bucks and find out, buddy.

It's a derby weekend! Vice Squad will be battling the Iron Curtain for second place. Even though Iron Curtain has not won a bout this season, the obscure system for standings allow them to make it if they pull out an upset and win by enough points.

That'll be at Bladeworld Saturday at seven. It'll cost you ten dollars because you forgot to buy your tickets early.

Bruno Kirby

DRIVER: Excuse me...are you reading Yes I Can?
GROUPIE: Yeah, have you read it?
DRIVER: Yeah, by Sammy Davis Jr.?
GROUPIE: Yeah.
DRIVER : You know what the title of that book should be? Yes I Can if Frank Sinatra Says it’s Okay. ‘Cause Frank calls the shots for all of those guys. Did you get to the part yet where uh...Sammy is coming out of the Copa...it’s about 3 o’clock in the morning and uh...he sees Frank? Frank’s walking down Broadway by himself....
(Limo window raised by Nigel)
DRIVER: F***in’ limeys.
MARTY: Well you know, ah...they’re not uh,...used to that world.
DRIVER: Yeah yeah.
MARTY: You know Frank Sinatra it’s a different world that they’re in.
DRIVER: You know, it’s just that people like this...you know... they get all they want so they don’t really understand, you know...about a life like Frank’s. I mean, you know when you’ve loved and lost the way Frank has, then you uh ...you know what life’s about.
MARTY: But you don’t feel these guys have an effect on an audience, I mean, kids go to their concert they have a great time, uhh....
DRIVER: But it’s...it’s a passing thing...it’s uh.... I mean I would never tell them this but this is uh...this is a fad.

It's the Soccer Equivalent of "Doctor, It Hurts When I Do This."

Los Angeles Galaxy über-fan Dan Loney, the MLS fanboy world's own Taylor Hicks, has ventured accidently into the truth. This from one of his posts on Big Soccer today on a thread entitled, "What can be done about the spate of last-minute game-changing penalty kicks":

How about not committing fouls in the box in the first place?
Just a thought. You don't have to forward this to the freaking Nobel Committee if you don't feel like it. Just putting it out there.

Nice. I hate giving a Galaxy fan credit for anything though.

I watched yesterday as the top two Argentine teams, Racing Club and Vélez Sársfield played to a 0-0 tie. This was one of the more bizarre games I have ever witnessed. Racing wasn't allowed to play at their home stadium due to fan behavior, so they were playing their "home" game away at some other stadium. So this "home" game was in front of near empty stands. They got a taste of playing for the Kansas City Wizards, I suppose.

Neither team came out of the tunnel and the referee had to go in and summon them. Then, the players spent a few minutes shaking hands and talking before getting into position. I don't know what the heck that was about.

Both teams played listlessly, with few, if any, shots being taken. At one point, a player pulled out the corner flag and was admonished by the referee. That's what passed for excitement. So much for Latin American "flair."

How bad was it? This is from Racing Club's own website:

A Racing no se le cayó una idea y Sava tuvo casi vedada el área: jugó allí menos de dos minutos en todo el partido. Dia feo, partido horrible. Proxima fecha ante las gallinas en cancha de Racing.

Translation: Today, Racing couldn't find it's own elbow.

Oddly, the PDL championship that Fox showed afterward between Laredo Heat SC and the Michigan Bucks had more excitement. To show how pathetic that is, the PDL is the league that the Tucson Amigos (whom I benchwarmed for once) played in.

Al Perry/The Jons/Greyhound Soul/Zsa Zsas

Okay...I got there too late to see Al Perry. But, I did get in free thanks to the lovely and talented Amy Muñoz.

Okay...this picture didn't come out so good. This is the twin horn attack of Jon Villa (any relation?) and Javier Gamez of The Jons. Excellent show as usual. Their style is Rock en Español with, um, English lyrics.

For some reason, people were standing far from the stage. It's not like they weren't into the show, they just were standing far away. A Hotel Congress employee that I didn't recognize tried to encourage people to stand closer. Strange.

I'm just guessing...but I think they own a couple Café Tacuba albums.

Greyhound Soul leader Joey Peña and Jason de Corse. This was the best I've seen them in a long time. The last show that I caught them at was when they played at the Hut a couple of weeks back. Unfortunately, that time they wallowed in that "we are sensitive, dammit!" mode. This time, they rocked. Or..."rawked," actually.

Under vaudeville traditions, the best act was actually second to last. The closing act would be something like a guy playing Welsh folk songs with a kazoo and washboard or a strange looking woman juggling wooden spoons. In other words, the last act would be the one to drive people out of the theater.

I don't know why I would bring that up.

I'm having a devil of a time uploading the rest of my photos. I'll put those up later.

The Good News Is That Le Caves Is Still Open

Remember all of the hype over Krispy Kreme when they opened here a few years ago?

Given the proclivities of some people to flock to any popular national chain the moment it opens in town, how the heck does one lose money? Anyone ever seen the lines at this place before opening time?

By the way, I was never that impressed with their donuts.

Golly, this means that people may have to, I dunno, shop local or something. Maybe even think for themselves. Oh the horror.

Battle of Adrianople

Today is the anniversary of the defeat of the Romans at Adrianople at the hands of a force of Visigoths, Ostrogoths and Alans led by the Visigothic King Fritigern in 378 AD.

Not sure what to do with that. I suppose we should all go out and sack the city in remembarance.

Arthur Lee

Arthur Lee, lead singer of Love, has died at the age of 61.

Never heard of him? You should have. Love was one of the most remarkable rock bands ever. The variety of styles that they could conquer is best summed up on the single for the song "Seven & Seven Is," a straight ahead rocker backed with the song "No. 14," a mellow piece that could have easily been released in the 19th century.

They came out of the same mid-sixties LA scene that spawned the Doors and the Turtles, and was more popular locally than either band, but their reluctance to do large scale tours limited their national popularity. Nonetheless, they were very influential.

Lee was of mixed race, and his guitar player, Johnny Echols, was black. That made Love a multi-racial hold-out at a time when rock was being separated back into "white" and "black" music again.

Here are two clips from American Bandstand, "Message to Pretty" and "Little Red Book" (A Burt Bacharach cover!) Doesn't Dick Clark look so young?

Lee recently hooked up with a band called Baby Lemonade. This is him performing the song "Seven & Seven Is" with them three years ago.

Their best song was the latin influenced "Alone Again Or." The song was often covered by other bands (here and here). This is a reunited Love performing it a couple of years back.

Freddy Fender Has Cancer

Freddy Fender has announced that he has an incurable form of lung cancer. I consider this guy one of my rock heroes. Just about any band that can claim the mantle of "Southwestern Rock" owes a huge debt to him and his combination of rockabilly and Mexican music.

I saw Fender play with the Texas Tornados at the Bishop's reception years ago. The Tornados included Tejano rock greats like Doug Sahm and Flaco Jimenez, but still, the performance I remember is Fender's. He got up to sing "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," and he owned that audience. He was pushing sixty at the time, his beer gut barely covered by a faded Harley-Davidson shirt, but there wasn't a woman in the place that didn't want to be with him, or a man that wasn't jealous of him. If that ain't great rock n' roll, I don't know what is.

Bueno suerte, Baldemar Huerta

MTV: Now Too Old to Appear on Real World

MTV has now turned 25. So, now we are treated to "Where are they now?" segments about Martha Quinn and Mark Goodman. I want to know what happened to Chyna Kantner. I also want to know what it is with 60's era San Francisco musicians naming their kids Chyna.

The easiest rock trivia question is, "What was the first video on MTV?" Everyone who asks thinks they are very clever. Well, I can out-geek you all because I actually own a copy of the Buggles album, The Age of Plastic, that contains the song "Video Killed the Radio Star."

Which begs another question for you, what ever happened to the Buggles? Funny you should ask. The band was actually no longer active when the video opened the MTV festivities in 1981. The entire band (which was only two people) joined Yes, replacing the departing Jon Anderson and Patrick Moraz. That line up only lasted one album, the underrated Drama, and they broke up at the end of the tour. Bear in mind, this all happened between the release of the single and the time it was actually shown on MTV.

So, instead of being all generic and posting "Video Killed the Radio Star," instead I will post Yes's video for "Tempus Fugit," which features Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes of the Buggles.

Okay, I relent. This is Buggles performing the song at the 2004 Prince's trust benefit. Interestingly, this was the first time the song was performed live.
