Freddy Fender Has Cancer
Freddy Fender has announced that he has an incurable form of lung cancer. I consider this guy one of my rock heroes. Just about any band that can claim the mantle of "Southwestern Rock" owes a huge debt to him and his combination of rockabilly and Mexican music.
I saw Fender play with the Texas Tornados at the Bishop's reception years ago. The Tornados included Tejano rock greats like Doug Sahm and Flaco Jimenez, but still, the performance I remember is Fender's. He got up to sing "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," and he owned that audience. He was pushing sixty at the time, his beer gut barely covered by a faded Harley-Davidson shirt, but there wasn't a woman in the place that didn't want to be with him, or a man that wasn't jealous of him. If that ain't great rock n' roll, I don't know what is.
Bueno suerte, Baldemar Huerta
