Syd Barrett

Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett has died of complications from diabetes. He was sixty.

Barrett sang and played guitar on only one Pink Floyd album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but songs such as "Astronomy Domine" and "See Emily Play" are classics of both psychadelia and progressive rock.

Unfortunately, he wasn't to lead Pink Floyd for long. The band brought in David Gilmour when Barrett's behavior became erratic, and he left the band soon afterward for a life of seclusion with his mother.

He provided inspiration for Pink Floyd's later song, "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and recorded two excellent solo albums.

This is a promo video for "Arnold Layne," recorded by Pink Floyd back in 1967. Better days for Syd. (Note: You may want to shut that Sand Rubies video off if it is still playing.)

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

Comments:
It is truly sad to see a music legacy like Syd Barrett die. Growing up, I used to listen to Pink Floyd and they are truly a beautiful band. It was a shame that Syd Barrett was not able to get his diabetes under control. (I suppose it was type II?)

To all out there who have family members with diabetes, remember that it can be hereditary and will definately increase your chances of getting it. So make sure you have your blood tested at least once a year for this. My late father had juvenile diabetes and needed to administer insulin three times a day before each meal. (Passed away from cancer, not complications from diabetes.) What increased my chances even more was that I gave birth to a baby over nine pounds. (Son was ten pounds). Consequently, after my son was born my glucose levels went up and my doctor told me I had pre-type II diabetes. This means sugar levels are high but not high enough to be diagnosed with type II diabetes. I eventually came to my senses and knew what I had to do. Lose weight, especially around the belly area, change my eating habits, and keep things low glycemic. This means greatly cutting back on refined sugars, white bread, rice, and pasta. Whole wheat is best. Also, watch the calories and remain active. A little bit of sweets once in a while is still ok. This was harder than holy hell for me. I am in no way trying to preach or say this was an easy thing to do. What made it easier for me was remembering that I had a beautiful child to raise and as long as I changed my habits that I would feel good and be happy to be alive for a long time. My glucose levels are now back to normal and I feel fortunate that this was caught in the pre stages before I had a chance to get this full blown. I feel that I have greatly slowed the progess down, or who knows, maybe I beat it to the punch?

If only one person out there takes this advice then I truly feel that I accomplished something.
