Look for the Signs

When you watch the US play today, check out the signs put up by Sam's Army. Many of these were designed by New England über-fans Prairie Clayton and Evan "Magpie" Whitney. Clayton's work, including details about what inspired her and what materials she used, can be seen on her website, TIFOSI. Of course, some of it involves in-jokes none of you will get, but that is half the fun, ennit?

The sign at the right is for DaMarcus Beasley.

I've got Japan-Australia on right now. The commentators are Shep Messing and Glen Davis, who had previously worked MetroStars games on MSG (Davis has been replaced with former ESPN play-by-play man J. P. Dellacamera). Actually I didn't like these two as MSG broadcasters, actually, just not Messing. Former Playgirl Playmate Messing seems to be in love with his own voice.

He seems to have learned all the wrong lessons from Dick Vitale. You half expect him to shout "BABY!" at inappropriate times. He is so busy talking that he seems to even forget which teams are actually playing (for example, he identified the Australian team as "the Dutch" at one point). He talks a little too much about goalkeepers, understandable given his previous career. I find it funny when he criticizes the goalkeepers. Yes, I know Messing was Pelé's choice for the New York Cosmos and all that, but man, cut these guys a break. They'd all look real good with Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer playing in front of them too.

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

Comments:
I did not get to watch any of them. This is why having cable would be nice. But then is it worth the $60 a month?
