Lalas to Sampson: You Are So Fired, Jackass!
Breaking news: Los Angeles Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas has fired Coach Steve Sampson. The Galaxy have only won two games this season, one against in-town rivals CD Chivas USA, and the other against Real Salt Lake (who have a similar dismal record). In a way, this is the second time that Lalas has fired Sampson, since he led a player revolt against Sampson after the disasterous 1998 World Cup that led to Sampson's firing as national team coach. The biggest insult here is that the Gals have fired Sampson without any replacement or interim coach being named. Ouch!
I remember LA fans telling me after their MLS Cup victory over New England last year that they actually regretted the win (in a small way), since their improbable cup run justified Sampson's continuing reign as coach.
There has been unconfirmed rumbling that some players didn't like Sampson's coaching style, which they felt didn't treat them as the professionals they are. This was a similar complaint about Sampson when he was national team coach. Sampson is despised by fans of all stripes for his bizarre tactics in the 1998 world cup and what is seen as his general incompetence. He came on board with the Gals after the bizarre firing of successful and well respected coach Sigi Schmid (when the Galaxy were in first place!), and took a winning team and changed it into, at best, a mediocre one.
Some replacement names have already circulated. The more interesting ones are Rangers/Celtic/Kansas City Wizards great Mo Johnston, who worked for Lalas in New York and has been seen as someone whose job is not too secure there. The more intriguing one is Jürgen Klinsmann, who has a pretty good gig coaching Germany right now, but he may be free in a few weeks. Klinsmann has some ties to the Los Angeles area, and even played for the Orange County Blue Star, ripping up a bunch of USL scoring records there under an alias a few years ago. Also, some have pointed out that current national team coach Bruce Arena may entertain coaching a club again after the world cup.
I'm sure he'd like me to point this out: this story was first broken by Los Angeles über-fan and BartCop personality Tommy Mack on the LA Riot Squad site.Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

They're now saying the leading contender is ex-SJ coach/current 'nuck national coach Frank Yallop, which I think wouldn't be a bad option at all.
Furthermore, I can think of no better way to start the World Cup than with the ceremonial firing of a man who fucked over two separate national teams in two successive tournaments, creating repercussions that both sides continue to suffer.

Because he was Jurgen Klinsmann and he is entitled to do that.
Klinsmann is one of the most famous players of the fifteen years, he thought it would be a kick to play on the local team. Given that it was a fourth division "developmental team," a guy with as 108 caps probably couldn't get away with playing in that league, so he adopted an alias. It didn't take long for him to be found out though.

I see Ted, well he should have adopted a cool tactic of wearing a ski mask or something to play for that team if that would be allowed.
But what on earth do you mean "a guy with as 108 caps probably couldn't get away with playing in that league." Good players are not allowed to play in lower leagues?
