Back to Me Bitching About the World Cup
Kasey Keller, I love the guy, but hey. For some reason, he just isn't up for World Cup matches. Don't get me wrong, I've seen the guy be HUGE for his clubs and for the US during qualifiers. I remember a few years ago when he was the arquero for Rayo Vallecano. The team went from promotion to top of the Spanish league, largely on the strength of his goal keeping. People keep talking about how great the guy is for our team, but check this out. The United States has had six wins, fifteen losses and two ties in World Cup play. Take a look at the victories:
1930
USA 3 - Belgium 0 ('Keeper - Jimmy Douglas)
USA 3 - Paraguay 0 ('Keeper - Jimmy Douglas)
1950
USA 1 - England 0 ('Keeper - Frank Borghi)
1994
USA 2 - Colombia 1 ('Keeper - Tony Meola)
2002
USA 3 - Portugal 2 ('Keeper - Brad Friedel)
USA 2 - México 0 ('Keeper - Brad Friedel)
Any name you don't see on the list? Of our fifteen losses in the World Cup, Keller was between the posts for four of them, a bit less than a third. One of the few losses that was worse than Monday's thrashing by the Czech Republic was our 1930 loss to Argentina, when the rules of the day didn't allow the injured Jimmy Douglas to be substituted out of the game.
I don't know, man, but Tim Howard and Marcus Hahnemann are available, right?
By the way, the other ignominous losses were to Italy, 7-1 in 1934 with Chicago Wieboldt Wonderbolts 'keeper Julius Hjulian minding the net, and to what was then known as Czechoslovakia in 1990, University of Virginia netminder Tony Meola presiding over a 5-1 loss.
Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

Well then who WOULD you pick for the next line up and what are your predictions for Saturday's game which I am probably going to miss for a very very good reason?
There is no GOOD reason for you to miss your country playing in the World Cup. Where is your sense of patriotism?
