The last remaining member of the squad that represented the United States at the World Cup in 1934 has
died at the age of 96. Fullback
Albert Harker had played for the Philadelphia German-Americans in the old ASL, and played on US squads with greats like
Billy Gonzalves and
Bert Patenaude.

Although the
US Soccer Hall of Fame lists Harker as a member of the 1934 squad, and friends of Harker report that he was always seen wearing a ring indicating he was a member of the squad, the
US Soccer History Archives doesn't list him as playing in either the "playoff" win against Mexico (4-2) or the elimination from the tournament at the hands of Italy (7-0). Yes, that means he was a bench warmer, but bench warmer at the World Cup is better than you've ever done.
He played in a draw (1-1) against Scotland at the Polo Grounds in New York in 1939.

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.
