Badlands, Loveblisters and Greyhound Soul at Plush; Green Lady Killers at Surly Wench

This toy helmet was on the stage for some strange reason. You tell me...
I keep forgetting how many people show up at Plush and don't actually care about the band, they just hang at the bar out front. I guess I shouldn't care, it keeps tickets down for the rest of us.

The first band was called Badlands. They are pretty new. The music would probably appeal to the fans of bands like Deathcab for Cutie or Dashboard Confessional. Not that they sound so much like them, they just seem to be in that baliwick. The singer had a very high, fragile voice, sort of reminded me of Ian Broudie/Lightning Seeds. Notice how high he capoes his guitar.

Ryan and Lou of the Loveblisters. Note the scarves tied to the microphones. Given their sound, this is more likely inspired by Marc Bolan than Steven Tyler. The bassist wore an ascot but took it off before he played. He probably realized that he was in Tucson.

The band had apparently lost some equipment in their last gig on a cruise. Was it that Arizona rock cruise that featured the Sand Rubies? They also were playing without one member, the second keyboard player. For the most part they winged it, but bid damn well.
They say they like playing here more than they do in Phoenix. We are just cooler, ain't we?

Tom calls me up and asks, "Why aren't you at Surly Wench...?" Funny, because I think the place scares him and he complains I hang out there too much. Anyway, this band called Green Lady Killers was playing. They reminded me of mid-80's Damned. The guitar player was great. He played one of those huge hollowbody Gretch guitars. I didn't get a picture of him because he was standing in the wrong place for it and wouldn't have looked as good in a skirt and fishnets.

I managed to get back to see Greyhound Soul's last song. Who knew they would play such a short set?

Don Jennings of Locals Only was at the show. Apparently he is actually in the Calexico video I posted a while back.

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

Ted, you rock man.
Thanks for coming out on such short notice.
It's true. We love playing in Tucson.
It's like this. Phoenix is our hometown - it's our wife. We love it, and always will. You have a committment to your home town that lasts and endures.
But Tucson? It's like that super hot chick who likes all the same bands that you do, and stays up as late as you do. The kinda girl who will call you up at 3am just to tell you that there is an Outer Limits marathon going on and you should come over and bring your Replacements records for "fun time" afterwards.
That's what Tucson is to us.
We want you, we lust after you, we desire you. But, we can't change where we're from without a divorce.

Actually, the name of that opening band is Redlands... on a related note, they'll be appearing on the live segment of Locals Only on April 10th. ;)
