It's difficult to get to know jazz anymore, even though it's The Great American Indigenous Artform. Even New York basically only has a few clubs where the world-class jazzers play live. Most cities have no such places.
I can't even remember the last time I heard Max Roach on the radio, because his kind of jazz just gets no play. It's not smooth enough, I guess.
So I guess I do not blame my otherwise pretty intelligent friends for not being familiar with its history.
Most people never get the chance to learn anything about jazz, or even most good rock/folk/indie/world/whatever music.
And there's a simple reason for this: corporate "values," if such things even exist, are not aesthetic values. Nor are they ethical values, in too many cases.
Thanks for posting him up. I think I'll go put on "Smooch." Mingus, Miles, and Roach together. Didn't happen much.

He looks almost exactly NOTHING like O.J. Oh...wait...he is a man...and black....(to quote the brilliant Wondershowzen) "Oh I get it, your racism is ironic!"
Duh.
