Alt-Country Nights at Surly Wench

I can always tell an alt-country night at the Surly Wench. I didn't know it was an alt-country night until I saw the women with tight jeans and boots. Actually, the couture of the entire crowd reaches a different level on the alt-country nights. I mean, these guys and gals dress up. The rest of us don't. Most of the time it's like, "hey, nice shirt, it's got buttons."

Like every alt-country night, the bill included Little Morts, the Wyatts and Clam Tostada. All of these guys are talented, but I've just grown a bit tired of them. Little Morts, who I liked a whole bunch when I first saw them, seem to be dedicated to wanting to replace Brooks and Dunn at the next Country Thunder festival rather than wanting to write rootsy, orginal music. You know, the "alt" part of alt-country. They seem to be well on the road to becoming a second rate Lynyrd Skynyrd, exactly the sort of thing that makes alt-country necessary.

I know that there has got to be other alt-country bands in town, even with Four Killer Flats and Truck being gone. Loren Dierks, we need you back! Please, tell me that there are others. Why the same three over and over again?

Interestingly, this is the first time I saw a band there in weeks. The talk was that the Emergenza Festival, a sort of battle of the bands, had turned off the owners to having any band play. Most of the bands that participated were horrible. That, combined with some poor experiences with some Phoenix area punk bands, left the stage at the Wench empty for a while.

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

Comments:
Ted defines "alt-country" as anything he likes. This is just a way for hipsters to pretend they don't like country music. It's just like how "alternative rock" was used by fans to describe music that sounds pretty much like other rock-n-roll. After hitting number 1 more than a few times, were Depeche Mode and REM really "alternative" anymore?

Labels are so stoopid.

You only mentioned Depeche Mode to bait Erik Trevino into posting, didn't you?

I wouldn't really call The Wyatts alt.country. Would you also use that term to describe The Peacemakers?

James

Thanks for setting me straight on the "alt." thing, Ted and Tom...

First I thought "alt." refered to a listserve or something.

Then I thought "alt." meant "for aging hipsters"....

I was so out of it....geesh!

Maybe the Rave-Ups could play a reunion show at the Wench...let me just ring them up on my sell-phone....

thot i heard depressed mode is coming to our strech of the woods. how 'bout depeche mode covering loretta lynn... now that would be interesting.
