Special Post for Eric Lybeck

This was a problem we did in Physics class tonight. Since I need to give credit, it is on page 745 of Physics, Volume 2 by Halliday, Resnick and Krane, Fifth Edition:
Consider the possiblility of a new design for an electric train. The engine is driven by the force due to the verticle component of the Earth's magnetic field on a conducting axle. Current is passed down one rail, into a conducting wheel, through the axle, through another conducting wheel, and then back to the source via the other rail. What current is needed to provide a modest 10-kN force? Take the vertical component of the Earth's field to be 10 μT and the length of the axle to 3.0 m. How much power would be lost for each ohm of resistance in the rails? Is such a train totally unrealistic or just marginally unrealistic?

Do zobaczenia. Hasta la proxima.

Comments:
Now this post is geeky.

I hate greyhound...they are charging $64 to go to Tucson for this weekend! Argh!

Excellent Ted, Excellent.

Elizabeth, if they are charging that much, it might be cheaper to take one of the shuttles that goes from tucson to sky harbor and back.

I suppose I could find about them but now it is too late. I only wanted to go down to do some autocalls.
