Dust Devil Championship

Kim Sin of Tucson Roller Derby sent out a release this week announcing the "Dust Devil National Championship" that will be held February 24-26. From the sounds of it, it looks like derby leagues around the country will be participating.

This is pretty amazing. TRD has only been in existence a little more than two and a half years, but they are already able to pull something like this off, where other leagues that have been around for a lot longer could never imagine doing this.

This is the first time that there has been any sort of true national tournament. It sounds as though the teams will be "travel" or "all star" teams from each league, rather than the actual league teams.

One of the 20 leagues that is participating is the Providence Roller Derby. Does this mean I get to meet Erin Gobraless?

Okay, she's Rhoda Perdition now, but hey, she ain't here to tell me any different.

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

Comments:
Probably because Tucson has nothing better to do then have people rolling around on skates, listen to so-so or decent music, and watch soccer on TV.

Unlike Phoenix which as far as I can tell has jack squat to do other then plays, symphonies and boring bands play at the major arenas that the gullible public paid for.

But then I never can go to anything since I work swing.

Your symphony actually has a really hard time getting public support for anything other than when a big name comes to town.

And Phoenix has Roller Derby too...its just that they have three leagues that are too busy fighting each other to put something like this on.

Geez, what brought this on?

Are you objecting to the subtle insult or my using the symphony in it?

Your are totally right about how gullible Phoenicians are. The bands are pretty boring too. Amazes me how much people are willing to pay for lousy entertainment. I guess that is because of all the transplants from Los Angeles and San Francisco (cities that actually have good local music, theater, and museums, as well as being hot spots for critically acclaimed national and international acts) that are upset they moved to such a sun-baked hellhole. What amuses me is many of these people used to drive up to two hours to go see local acts (from Santa Rosa to Berkeley, for instance) but refuse to go down to Tucson for its nationally and internationally acclaimed local music and art scene.

Because it is Tucson.

Ahhh...
the pat Phoenician answer. Where I live must be good, because I live here. Tucson must be bad because it is somewhere in Arizona besides Phoenix. I know that Tucson is not the greatest city on Earth, but I have lived for long periods of time in many of the cultural centers of the United States, and Phoenix is not one of them. It is an awful city, and everyone that lives there knows it on some intrinsic level. Explain why even Ozfest bypasses Phoenix for Tucson, but Phoenix is part of the Ultimate Fighting Circuit. Why do all of the best musicians, artists, engineers, and scientists move from Phoenix? Intel doesn't count; all of the native employees are laborers. It is wideley known that Phoenix experiences one of the greatest brain-drains in the country. Suprisingly even worse than frozen-over and tornado prone Nebraska. But I guess that is just because it is "Phoenix"...
