Pictures From Last Night - Al Perry All-Star Barbecue
Chris Cacavas of the Pedestrians, Giant Sand, Green on Red and Junkyard Love. Yeah, he's been at it for a while. I hear he likes Lyle Lovett.
Local music god Al Perry playing with The Fraidy Cats, the first of four (FOUR!) bands he played with that night.
The front line of The Fraidy Cats, Al Perry, Jefferson Keenan and Jim Parks. Keenan and Parks were the heart of The Phantom Limbs, the Greatest Tucson Band Ever. The Fraidy Cats used to cover Phantom Limbs songs, but last night, their songs were all country covers.
Jefferson Keenan started out trying to be a member of The Pedestrians, but instead was asked to join a new band that was being formed called Ménage-à-Trois. He's now a lawyer in town, working at the firm of power house defense attorney Michael Picaretta.
Instead of original Fraidy Cats drummer Tom Larkins (Jonathan Richman, Naked Prey), they had some guy named John Convertino.
The evening also featured a reunion of The Hecklers, who haven't played together since 1982. This is the origninal Heckler's line up, no substitutes. The lead vocalist is Craig Schumacher, who played trumpet on several local albums in the early eigties and now is a sought-after engineer and producer for some big national acts.
The Hecklers got some props in the sixth issue of Maximum Rocknroll after Jello Biafra found their tape in a garbage can.
Many of the Heckler's songs are about shopping mall culture ("Shopping Mall Baby", "El Con Malo.") Appropriate, since they often would play at Tequila Mockingbird. Anyone remember that place?
Something to note is the music stand. The older bands had more trouble remembering the lyrics than the music.
Gila Bend, with a line-up featuring Al Perry and original drummer Bart Blue. They summed up their attitude by saying, paraphrasing here, we we've lost our hair and we are fatter, but we still rock harder than anyone!
Loren Dircks and bassist Jim Blackhall.
"Guest Vocalist" Brad Brooks of Pollo Elastico.
Loren Dircks solo. When he solos, contorts himself and looks like he is on the verge of expelling some sort of parasitic alien creature from his body.
Hey, there's Jefferson Keenan again.
Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

Loren: Brad did back up vocals on Kim Chee Cowboy, because we were poor and couldn't afford multi-tracking.Guest guitarist Chuck Prophet IV (Green on Red). Notice that Loren is blury; that's because he's rockin'.
Jim: No, we did it because we didn't have anyone who could sing.
