They had a reunion of the original line-up of the
Friends of Dean Martin Sunday night. The original line-up included
Joey Burns and
John Convertino (now of
Calexico) and
Van Christian of
Naked Prey. Burns, Convertino and Christian left the group around the same time that
Dean Martin threatened to sue them and the name had to be changed to the
Friends of Dean Martinez.
Bill Elm, who I went to High School with. A few weeks ago, I posted his
high school yearbook picture on here, but he and his wife thought it was funny. She said his hair was cute. Just to show you how small Tucson is, even when you leave town, his step father is a guy named
Richard Kimball, who I worked for on a US Senate race in 1986. (He got beaten by some Phoenix congressman named
John McCain) Kimball went on to found
Project Vote Smart. Elm's wife, the former
Rogie Baer, was our music director at
KAMP. Bear in mind, Elm's and Kimball's marriages happened after these people left Tucson. There is no escape...

Elm gave me a copy of their
Live at Club 2 release. It is excellent.

Joey Burns. I never actually saw his face.
Van Christian, who rocks, but not here. This is about atmosphere.
John Convertino's back. Just how many bands did John play with that weekend?
That night? I was half expecting him to sit in with
Love Mound or
Doo Rag.
