Because the Scene, and All It Means, Stirs Things Inside of Me
Labor Day weekend will feature a special 20th Anniversary Bash at Club Congress. They managed to arrange for reunions of just about every band that ever made any sort of mark on the Old Pueblo Music scene. Apparently, Earl's Family Bombers, Pollo Elastico and The Cosmic Boogie Tribe will even be making appearances. No word yet on Zoom Schwartz and the Dry Heaves.
I thought the Phantom Limbs would be resurrected for this event, but they are not listed on the roster on Club Congress's site. This would be too bad, they are still my favorite band ever to come out of the local scene. Yes, John and Joey, I even like them better than you.
The Limbs only achieved a wee bit of outside-of-the-Gadsden-Purchase notoriety in their day. For a while, they had decamped to San Francisco and had some hits on Bay Area college radio. Apparently, the song "Suicide" off of their first album, was a major turntable hit in the region. (This is back when radio stations had turntables, kids)
The song was ready made for the smart-ass college D.J. set (I say that because I was a smart-ass college D.J.):Something about the way you talk to me
Makes me want to wallow in my misery
Something about you all of a sudden
Makes me want to stick my head in the oven
A later verse:
Something about wearing my heart on my sleve
Makes me a little difficult to believe
Something about feeling sorry for myself
Makes me happier than anything else
This, plus the occasional interjections of "I'm a lot of fun at parties," made it the perfect college radio hit.Apparently, there is some death metal band called the Phantom Limbs now. Bastards!
There will be a River Roses reunion though. They managed to get Caitlin von Schmidt to come all the way out from New York to join them, but Peter "Splat" Catalonotte will not be playing with them. Come on, Splat, what gives?
The event will also be the premiere of Michael Toubassi's documentary High and Dry, which is about the "legendary" Tucson music scene. Are we legendary? I guess so, if they made a movie about us.Just to give you an idea about how small Tucson is despite its size: I went to school with Michael's cousin and Michael was in KAMP with me. He also was in a band, the Eyepennies. I didn't see that they were going to be playing.
Apparently, this thing is so big that even the governor has gotten into it.
The New Pornographers are going to be playing in Tucson on October 1st. There is a rumor going around that Neko Case will not be there. Eh? What the hell is the point of that then? Are people going to be busting down the door to see Blaine Thurier? How many people saw the Commodores without Lionel Ritchie? The J. Giles Band without Peter Wolf? Animotion without Astrid Plane and that other guy?
Hasta la Proxima. Do zobaczenia.
